Why gustar sometimes takes a plural verb

Me gusta / Me gustan

meh GOOS-tah / meh GOOS-tahn — I like (it) / I like (them)

"Me gusta el café, pero me gustan los tés de hierbas."
I like coffee, but I like herbal teas.

"Gustar" agrees with the thing being liked, not with the person — singular thing = gusta, plural things = gustan. Once this clicks, the whole gustar pattern stops feeling backwards.
